Literacy Program

- Are you interested in volunteering to help students develop their literacy skills?
- Would you like access to a computer lab with internet access and programs to help you with typing, reading, writing, and pronunciation?
The Literacy Program is a Volunteer staffed program that allows ESL (English as a Second Language) and ABE (Adult Basic Education) students to improve their English literacy and computer skills. Free tutor training is available to persons who wish to be Volunteer Tutors in the Literacy Program.
About the Literacy Program
This program's goal is to improve the reading, math and/or communication skills for adults (16 years and older) whose reading levels are below the 9th grade. The program provides the following services to meet the literacy needs of its participants:
- Tutoring-One-on-one tutoring is available through volunteer tutors. Volunteer tutors are trained in teaching basic reading and/or English Literacy. This free tutoring is done in local libraries and churches as well as in community class sites.
- Testing - Reading/math tests and pre-assessments for specific learning disabilities are available to identify adult reading needs.
- Tutor training - Free training available for individuals interested in being volunteer tutors with learners or in Adult Education Learning Lab.
- Adult Education Learning Lab - The lab is available to Literacy Program participants. The lab provides free internet access and programs in typing, reading, writing, and pronunciation skills.
