KC celebrates Asian-American Heritage Month

Kishwaukee College is offering a wide range of informative and fun activities and events during April in celebration of Asian-American Heritage Month. This year, Kishwaukee College is partnering with Northern Illinois University to offer several events, creating even more opportunities for community residents to experience and explore Asian-American culture and traditions. All events are free unless otherwise noted.

Events and activities include:

April 4 at Kishwaukee College, Main Atrium, 8:30 – 10:30a.m., sample the unique flavors of Asian teas and sweets; April 5 at NIU, Holmes Student Center Gallery Lounge, 5:30p.m., Japanese Block Art Demonstration by Erin K. Nolan (sponsored by the NIU Asian American Center); April 7 at Kishwaukee, Conference Center Dining Room, noon-1:00p.m., “Sushi for Everyone” with Michelle Bringas; April 9 A Day in Chicago’s Chinatown (cost: $15 for train, tour and lunch-reservations required; contact Sittie Jackson, KC Counseling Center at 815-825-2086, ext. 3380); also April 9, Pag-Asa Benefit Concert at NIU, Duke Ellington Ballroom- Holmes Student Center, 7 – 11:00p.m. (cost $5—sponsored by the NIU Philippine Student Association); April 11, Kishwaukee, Main Atrium, 10:00a.m. – noon, learn origami; April 12, at Kishwaukee, A-225, 11:00a.m. – noon, Understanding Acupuncture and the Relaxing Art of Qi Gong with Pat Faivre; also April 12, at DeKalb High School, room 142, 6 – 9:00p.m., Chinese Stir Fry and Fried Rice with Meg Hon (cost: $38); April 13 at Kishwaukee, Main Atrium, 11:00a.m. – 1:00p.m. Tropical Flower Café (sponsored by the Kishwaukee Horticulture Department); also April 13 at NIU, Boutelle Memorial Concert Hall, 8:00p.m., Chinese Music Ensemble (sponsored by the NIU School of Music); April 14 at Kishwaukee, Main Atrium, 11:00a.m. – noon, Enjoy Chinese Food! and from 12:30 – 1:30p.m. Let’s Play Mah Jong with Doris Boey and Friends; April 18, Kishwaukee, A-225, 11:00a.m. – noon, Puppet Project—a Partnership Between Kishwaukee College and Bhutan presented by Carla Raynor; and April 28 at Kishwaukee, cafeteria, 11:30a.m. – 1:00p.m., Karaoke and Food Sale (sponsored by the KC Intercultural Student Club).
