KC offers free GED preparation classes
August 29th, 2008—Adult learners can prepare for the GED exam by taking free classes offered through Kishwaukee College's Adult Education department. Enrollment is open, so participants can join a class at any time during the fall semester; classes began the week of August 25. There is no charge to the participant for GED classes. GED classes cover reading, writing, science, social studies, and mathematics. Adults work at their own level and speed.  Full Article

August 26th, 2008—Kishwaukee College is offering a unique opportunity for students this year to explore their potential and discover if they have the right stuff to become a leader on campus, on the job, and in the community. The i~Lead program begins this fall at the College and is open to all Kishwaukee students who are interested in learning more about themselves and what being a leader really means. Sara Pohl, Dean of Career Technologies and one of the staff members on the i~Lead team, explained, "This is a great program for students at all stages of leadership development—from experienced leaders who want to expand their skills to students who simply want to explore the various aspects of what leadership means. The only requirement is to have an interest in leadership."  Full Article

August 26th, 2008—Kishwaukee College students from Rochelle and DeKalb will benefit from two new bus services available to students and members of the community. The College will be a destination for the newly launched Lee-Ogle Transportation System (LOTS), with routes running Monday through Friday and will also be on a new evening line run by TransVAC from DeKalb.  Full Article
ESL and Spanish GED classes at Kishwaukee College
August 26th, 2008—The Adult Education department at Kishwaukee College is offering English as a Second Language (ESL) courses at various times during fall 2008. The classes help adults with limited English proficiency learn the basics of speaking, listening, reading, and writing with practical applications to daily life. There are also GED classes conducted in Spanish being offered during the fall semester, which began August 25. Classes are free and have an open enrollment, so participants may join a class at any time during the semester. With sufficient enrollment, childcare may be provided for children from birth through age 7 while their parents are in class; for more information on childcare availability, call 815-825-2086, ext. 291.  Full Article

August 25th, 2008—Kishwaukee College art instructor Carol-lynn Swol, second from right, took advantage of the lovely weather to take the students in her ART 212 Three-Dimensional Design class outside to illustrate the fundamentals of design using nature and placed objects on Monday. Kishwaukee College began the fall 2008 semester on August 25. Fall play auditions on September 17 and 18
August 22nd, 2008—Nadine Franklin, theater instructor and director at Kishwaukee College, has announced auditions for the College's Fall 2008 production of Ron Parker's Under the Influence will be held on Wednesday, September 17, and Thursday, September 18, at 7:00p.m. in the Kishwaukee College Theater, Room B-211. Auditions are open and participating actors are strongly encouraged to read the script prior to auditioning. Copies of the script are on reserve at the Kishwaukee College Library. August 22nd, 2008—Kat Martin, Assistant to the Athletic Director at Kishwaukee College, has announced a new club just for the area's young sports fans: the Kougar Kids' Club. Kody the Kougar is the mascot of the Kishwaukee College athletic teams. Membership is open to all kids through eighth grade and costs $35.  Full Article

Lincoln Highway in DeKalb on Mondays, August 25 - December 8, from 1 - 3:40 p.m. This class is free and has open enrollment which allows students to join the class at anytime.  Full Article

August 21st, 2008—Kishwaukee College is welcoming four new full-time faculty members to campus this fall in the office systems, horticulture, philosophy, and nursing departments. Classes begin August 25 for the fall 2008 semester.  Full Article
Advanced ESL classes begin for fall
August 21st, 2008—The Adult Education department of Kishwaukee College is offering classes for advanced students of English as a Second Language (ESL) beginning the week of August 25; students may register for Advanced ESL classes through September 5. All classes cost $124.50. Advanced level ESL classes assist students who have intermediate language skills to improve their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Improvement in English fluency may lead to better employment opportunities and academic advancement. There are three types of classes: Advanced ESL, Academic Advanced ESL, and Pronunciation/Communication Strategies. Placement testing is required for enrollment in advanced level ESL classes; call 815-825-2086, ext. 313 for testing information.  Full Article

August 20th, 2008—The Kishwaukee College Adult Education Department is offering a new course, Math for the GED and Beyond, for GED students. The new class will focus exclusively on preparation for the math portion of the official GED/high school equivalency exam. Tricia Wagner, Director of Adult Education, said, "Many students are unreasonably afraid of the math portion of the GED test. They are afraid they can't do it, but the truth is that they can. This class will give students practical tools and fun techniques to strengthen their foundational math skills so that they can pass that math GED test, and also be prepared to enter college level math courses." The class will meet on Mondays, September 8 - December 15, from 1- 3:40p.m. at Kishwaukee College in Room A-110. This class is offered free to participants. There is a registration deadline of September 2; interested students should contact the Adult Education department to register.  Full Article

August 15th, 2008—Dr. Tom Choice, President of Kishwaukee College, welcomes Kathy Watkins, Executive Director of Kishwaukee Education Consortium, to the College's Malta campus. KEC will open the doors at their new building for classes August 20th. KEC provides basic education and skill training for immediate employment or advanced education programs as well as additional alternative education programs to serve at-risk and economically disadvantaged clients.

August 14th, 2008—Kishwaukee College Department of Adult and Continuing Education and the DeKalb Illinois workNet Center(formerly the IETC), are pleased to announce the beginning of two free classes being offered at the Center. A free Basic Computer Literacy class will begin Monday, August 25th from 4:30pm to 6:05p.m. and continue each Monday for 8 weeks. No previous experience with computers is required. August 4th, 2008—Looking for a getaway that doesn't mean splurging on gas? Kishwaukee College is offering ENG 211, American Literature and ENG 298, Magical British Literature. Study American writers in ENG 211, through the eyes of Poe, Hawthorn, Twain, and several more famous writers. KC offers Hybrid class, environmentalism and education go hand in hand
August 4th, 2008—Kishwaukee College offers Hybrid classes. Hybrid courses combine online and face-to-face formats. Each hybrid course has a unique meeting pattern, which is explained at the first orientation session. These college-credit courses do not take place in a traditional classroom. Students learn by watching videos, reading the textbook, completing quizzes, exams, and written assignments. Instructor assistance is available if need be. Hybrid course participants must have access to an Internet link that can meet the technical requirements of the course.  Full Article
KC Family Literacy Program received Rockford Area Arts Council Access GrantKC Family Literacy Program received Rockford Area Arts Council Access Grant
August 1st, 2008—The Family Literacy Program of Kishwaukee College recently received a Rockford Area Arts Council Access Grant in which families were able to work together to re-create the animal folk-art from Oaxaca, Mexico. Currently, the animals are on display in Kishwaukee College's library and in the middle of August, will be on display in the Youth Department of the DeKalb Public Library, located at 309 Oak Street in DeKalb. This program is partially supported by a grant from the Rockford Area Arts Council which received support from the City of Rockford, the Illinois Arts Council, and its members. The Family Literacy Program provides educational experiences for children from infancy through age 7 while their parents are in GED preparation or English as a Second Language classes offered by Kishwaukee College throughout the district.
