Automotive technicians inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain automobiles and light trucks such as pickups, SUVs, and vans. Employers of today’s auto techs include auto dealers, independent repair shops, auto manufacturers, engine distributors and dealers, competition race teams, and car care chains to name a few. No matter where they build their careers, auto technicians must be skilled in mechanical and electronic areas to be able to work with today’s high-tech automobiles. On-board computers, flexible fuel systems, high performance engines, and sophisticated passenger comfort features drive the continuous need for current training.
As today’s automobiles become more and more sophisticated, so do the tools of the trade. Auto techs need to use computerized shop equipment and electronic components as well as traditional tools. Many of today's auto techs in the automotive field find that diagnosing vehicle problems provides them opportunities to use problem-solving skills and creativity—making a career in automotive technology both challenging and rewarding.
