Program Information
The Biology Department at Kishwaukee College provides students who are planning to transfer to a four-year college or university with a solid foundation for the first two years of college. For most of our students, our courses provide options in fulfilling General Education Life Science requirements. When completing these requirements, our students can choose from one of four options — Environmental Biology, General Biology, Animal Ecology and Human Biology -- each of which have available laboratory course work. Some of these courses are offered via traditional face to face instruction, as well as on line and hybrid delivery.
The Department of Biological Sciences has a number of course offerings that fulfill the General Education Life Science requirement for the AA or AS degrees.
Students intending to major in Biological Sciences should first determine the requirements for a Bachelor’s degree at the college or university to which they plan to transfer. Three courses, Organismal Diversity, Principles of Biology I and Principles of Biology II are suggested for majors to complete prior to transfer to a four-year college or university. Principles of Biology I and II also fulfill requirements for some health care professional programs to a four-year college or university.
Both Anatomy and Physiology and Microbiology are offered as service courses, supporting health career programs such as nursing and radiology.
Our course curricula are supported by cadaver studies, use of modern molecular and cellular techniques, a native plants garden to enhance diversity studies and field study experiences both on and off campus.
Occupational Information
A student majoring in Biology might pursue a career as a marine biologist, forester, veterinarian, nutritionist, physician’s assistant or molecular biologist. Dozens of different career paths are available in environmental, health and agricultural sciences, and in education for students with a strong sense of curiosity about the world around them and a desire to contribute to society.
Our program here at Kishwaukee provides an excellent and economical start for a student’s academic pursuits in Biology.
