Program Information
The Early Childhood Education program at Kishwaukee College provides a solid foundation for those drawn to this exciting and vital profession. As a student in Early Childhood Education, you will have several options:
- Work in a child care center, preschool, or special program for children ages 2 through 8 with a two-year (A.A.S.) Associate of Applied Science degree that also provides middle-management skills.
- Transfer to a four-year college or university to continue your education in the field of child development or education. Students interested in transferring should discuss their plans with an academic advisor.
Occupational Information
Children symbolize hope for the future and are the single most important resource in society. When parents work, the professionals entrusted with their children are Early Childhood educators. Early Childhood educators are employed as child care workers in child care centers, in their own homes, and as pre-school teachers.
For the young child, the educational experience is less about the “Three Rs” than about appropriate behavior, social growth, and gaining an understanding of the world around them and their place within it. In order to nurture, motivate, and teach young children, professional Early Childhood educators use creativity and patience as well as leadership, organizational, and administrative skills. For those called to this profession, the work is challenging… but the rewards are great.
