The Kaleidoscope: What is it?

The Kaleidoscope is Kishwaukee College's student-run newspaper.It is published seven times per semester and usually runs about eight pages.The paper consistently wins awards in the annual Illinois Community College Journalism Association contest.  All editorial decisions are made by student editors; the advisor(s) serve to instruct and make recommendations but they do not run, or censor, the paper.

Who can be part of the Kaleidoscope staff?

Any current student at Kishwaukee College may serve on the newspaper staff.

Can I get credit?

Yes!  To receive credit for participating student must register for JOU 111.Students may repeat by registering for JOU 112 and 113.  Attendance at regular staff meetings is required. 

Do I have to be registered in one of those classes?

No.You can still be part of the Kaleidoscope staff without registering for JOU 111/112/113, but coming to the scheduled meetings is recommended.

When are those scheduled meetings?

Fall: M/W/F at 1pm
Spring: M/W/F at Noon
Do keep in mind that participation requires more than attending meetings in order to interview people, write stories, take photos, lay out pages, etc.

Do I need any sort of previous experience?

No previous experience is necessary. Likewise, there is no prerequisite for JOU 111.

What kind of position can I have?  Is it just writing?

The Kaleidoscope is always in need of students to fill the following positions:

  • Reporter
  • Sportswriter
  • Columnist
  • Feature Writer
  • Photographer
  • Cartoonist
  • Graphic Designer/Layout Specialist 

What kind of technology do you use for production?

The Kaleidoscope is produced entirely by Kishwaukee College students using Adobe InDesign 2.0 for Mac.  Prior experience with Adobe PageMaker, Adobe Photoshop, or Adobe InDesign (Mac or PC) is a plus for designers, but in no way required.

So how can I become part of the Kaleidoscope staff?

Simply drop a statement of interest in the Kaleidoscope mailbox at any time.  That's it.  The Mail Room is located in B100 hallway between the Cafeteria and the Main Entrance.
