Social Media

Kishwaukee College's official social media outlets

Facebook

Facebook is a free social network service that has more than 500 million active users around the world, as of July 2010. Users create personal profiles, add other users as friends and then exchange messages, including posting photos, videos, and links to other websites. Organizations can also create pages and individuals or other organizations can “like” the organization’s page and begin receiving posts and interact on the page. Kishwaukee College has an organizational page and encourages students, staff, and community members to “like” the College page! The College Facebook page is an excellent way to find out what is happening on campus and get reminders, important dates, and information during the semester. Plus, the page is interactive—friends of Kishwaukee College can comment on posts, share information or simply post on the page “wall” to comment or ask a question. The Facebook administrator responds and answers questions, so the Facebook page is a great give-and-take communication medium. When we ask you to “find us on Facebook,” we hope you do---you’ll enter a whole new way to keep up with Kish!

Foursquare

Foursquare is a location-based social network that aims to make you explore your city—in this case college!--and unlock rewards. Foursquare encourages you to visit new places on campus as well as challenges you to become an explorer. Kishwaukee College on Foursquare has several venues (or places) on campus that you are encouraged to visit, then check in once you are there, and receive badges and points. Visit a venue often enough and you could become its virtual mayor!  Foursquare players not only compete to earn badges and become mayors, but share tips---noting great things to do at the venues on campus, personal favorite places on campus or little known perks! You play on a mobile phone or other device—download the foursquare app onto your iPhone, select Blackberry models, Android, Palm, or laptop; Foursquare Mobile is available if you do not have a SmartPhone.

When you “check in” to a venue on campus, all your Foursquare friends know where you are. If you link your Facebook or Twitter accounts with your Foursquare account, every time you visit a new venue and check-in, that check-in will be posted on your Facebook or Twitter pages as an update, along with a map of the venue so your friends or followers can see where you are. Always remember to play by the rules!

Twitter

Twitter is social network micro blog service, enabling its users to send and read other users' messages called tweets. If you want to receive Kishwaukee College’s tweets, become a Twitter follower of Kish! Then you will automatically receive every tweet the College posts. Posts are limited to 140 characters (that includes punctuation and spaces!) so the Tweets are quick to read.  The Kishwaukee College Twitter page is a great place to find out important events or information about campus. If you need more information than can be conveyed in 140 characters, the College will include a link to a webpage in the Tweet.

All Twitter users can send and receive tweets via the Twitter website and compatible external applications, such as for SmartPhones.

Since it began in 2006, Twitter has gained popularity worldwide and currently has more than 175 million users, generating 65 million tweets a day and handling over 800,000 search queries per day. Kishwaukee College generates a few tweets each week to add to that number—follow us on Twitter and keep current with Kish!

YouTube

YouTube is a video-sharing website on which users can upload, share, and view videos. The site features only user-generated video content, including movie clips, TV clips, and music videos, as well as amateur content such as video blogging and short original videos. Kishwaukee College uploads several videos of events on campus or of students each semester and has its own “channel” within YouTube that has only Kish videos! You can subscribe to the Kishwaukee College YouTube channel to watch your classmates—or maybe you!—on the Internet. The videos are available for anyone in the world to see, making Kishwaukee College a member of the global video community!
