ANSWER: The default template settings for creating new documents were updated in Word 2007, but you might prefer to create documents that look exactly like those you created in an earlier version of Word. From Microsoft Office Online.
Create a new document with Word 2003 formatting one time
- Click the Microsoft Office Button
, and then click New. - Under Templates, click Installed Templates, and then scroll to the Office Word 2003 Look template.
- Click Office Word 2003 Look.
- Next to Create new, click Document, and then click Create.
A blank document opens with the Word 2003 default styles and fonts.
Switch to Word 2003 formatting after you have started a document with Word 2007 formatting
If you have already started to create your document in Word 2007 using the default settings, you can change the formatting to look like the default formatting in earlier versions of Word.
On the Home tab, in the Styles group, click Change Styles.
- Point to Style Set, and click Word 2003.
- In the Styles group, click Change Styles
- Point to Fonts, and under Built-in, click Office Classic.
Use Word 2003 formatting as the default for all new documents
Use the Office Word 2003 Look template
After you use the Office Word 2003 Look template, it appears in your list of recently used templates.
The next time you want to create a document, do the following:
- Click the Microsoft Office Button
, and then click New. - Under Recently Used Templates, double-click Office Word 2003 Look.
Whenever you want to create a document based on updated Word 2007 formatting, use the Blank document template.
Save style and font settings as your default
On the Home tab, in the Styles group, click Change Styles.
- Point to Style Set, and click Word 2003.
- In the Styles group, click Change Styles
- In the Styles group, click Change Styles, and then click Set as Default.
- Point to Fonts, and under Built-in, click Office Classic.
When you create a new, blank document based on the Word 2007 default template (Blank document), the style and font set you that selected are used as the default formatting settings.
If you want to use the updated Word 2007 formatting, switch to the Word 2007 style set and the Office font set. You can switch back to your custom default settings later by clicking Reset to Quick Styles from Template (in the Styles group, click Change Styles, point to Style Sets, and then click Reset to Quick Styles from Template).
