With pet ownership on the rise, the need for skilled Veterinary Assistants is projected to increase over time. Working with Veterinarians and Veterinary Technicians, Veterinary Assistants help provide medical care to sick and injured animals. Duties of a Veterinary Assistant can include feeding and watering animals, sterilizing lab and surgical equipment, preparing of samples for lab examination and more.
This comprehensive Veterinary Assistant training consists of 150 hours of instruction (90 hours of classroom instruction and 60 hours of hands-on externship in a veterinarian's office/clinic or animal hospital/clinic.) Topics of study include: client relations, office and hospital procedures, animal nursing, exam room procedures (hospital sanitation, weight/tpr, animal handling and restraint, and preventive care protocols), surgical prep and assisting, laboratory procedures, radiology and pharmacology. This training is designed to help students prepare for a career in the animal healthcare industry.
Due to the inherent requirements of the profession, the following minimum abilities are expected of each student: high school diploma or equivalent with at least a 10th grade math and English (speaking and reading) level; psychomotor skills (eye-hand coordination and finger dexterity) and visual acuity (normal or corrected) sufficient for safe and successful practice of veterinary duties. Externships are typically scheduled for a 2-3 week period during the latter part of the class. Students are required to provide their own transportation to and from various externships sites which can be located within a 50 mile radius of Kishwaukee College. Drug testing and a criminal background check may be required for licensure or employment.
Students may wish to contact various animal care facilities to find out more about the job market in their area. There is no national certification available for Veterinary Assistants. This is noncredit training. Federal and State financial aid do not apply to noncredit trainings, however Kishwaukee College offers a payment plan option. Students must be at least age 18 to register. There is a payment plan available.
