Housing Opportunities

While Kishwaukee College does not have on-campus living, there are no restrictions on where students may live. Some students choose to live at home or in apartments with friends, while others choose University Plaza in DeKalb for a more traditional college residence hall living experience.

Housing Resources

Kishwaukee College does not approve, endorse or recommend any off-campus facilities. However, there are several local databases offering information about local housing options.

  1. The NIU online resources are available to everyone. Resources include moving tips, sample roommate agreements, contacts to local storage units and moving vans, information about section 8/subsidized housing, pet-friendly rentals and more.
  2. The Northern Star, Northern Illinois University's student-run newspaper, compiles an annual housing guide.
  3. The Daily Chronicle, serving DeKalb County, offers local classified listings for rental properties.
  4. Century 21 Elsner Realty in DeKalb maintains a courtesy list of rental properties. Call 815-756-1691 or visit the office at 901 N. First Street in DeKalb for more information.
  5. Illinois Housing Development Authority, The Illinois Court-Based Rental Assistance Program (CBRAP) provides emergency rental assistance to tenants and housing providers/ landlords across Illinois who have pending cases in eviction court. Eligible applicants may qualify for up to $10,000 that can be applied to past due rent, up to $700 for court costs, and up to two months' future rent to prevent housing displacement.

Students considering residential options should also consider transportation needs. The College offers low-cost transportation options from both DeKalb and Rochelle. Students are encouraged to select an apartment on or near the bus route for a more convenient living experience.

NOTE: Financial Aid DOES NOT cover housing costs. However, under some financial aid programs, reimbursement checks may be used to cover costs of living.

House Liaison

Students who are enrolled at Kishwaukee College may access assistance from the College’s house liaison when experiencing homelessness. A homeless individual can be someone who is lacking fixed, regular and adequate nighttime residence or someone whose parent or legal guardian is unable or unwilling to provide shelter and care, according to the federal McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, 1987. To get started on finding assistance, please fill out the H.U.B. (Housing, Undocumented and Benefits Navigation) Referral Form.
